There could be dozens of essential oils in the market where you can find suitable for you to diffuse in your home and in the gym to spice up your zest for physical activities.

Lemon Oil

It has a citrus scent but less sweet than the orange oil, but both are known for their energizing effects. It is the perfect way to condition not only your body but as well as your mood for exercise.

Diffusing a lemon oil in the water and inhale it for a few minutes is a sure way to jumpstart your group physical activities in the gym. Since essential oil takes a few minutes to be absorbed by the body, you must diffuse it minutes before your gym sessions.

You will feel revitalized, and surely you will be the best-smelling person in the gym. 

Soothes and calms the nerves and muscles

The body is not a machine. Even how athletic a person is still the body feels tired and weary.

It is the body’s natural mechanism that after the burning sensations, it will subside, and you will already feel your muscle is aching and body pain. You can combat those aching moments not through the medications but through the essential oil of lavender. 

The aroma of lavender has calming and relaxing effects. Diffuse a few drops of lavender oil to calm your nerves, tired body, and weary soul. It may even be the perfect duo for yoga sessions or after having a strenuous physical activity.

For many people looking to kick start their athletic performance taking performance enhancing drugs seems like the easiest answer. While the upside to doing so may very well seem ideal. Often it is not.  Taking these kinds of drugs have far too  many side effects.

While taking stimulants can boost an athlete’s performance and promote aggressiveness on the field, they have side effects that can seriously impair the athlete

Such as: nervousness, irritability which can make it difficult to concentrate on the sport that they are participating in, insomnia and dehydration. At the moment that may seem a small price to pay to get the results that you are after, the cost of long term use is far reaching.

Red Flags

For parents not used to dealing with performance enhancing drugs and their teens there are some definite red flags that you can look out for. If your child who has always had an easy going nature suddenly starts acting out, having emotional swings or psychological changes particularly increased aggressive behavior.

If there is a rapid change in their body build such as muscle growth and rapid weight gain.

Once down that rabbit hole it is necessary to continue the use of PED to continue playing at the level that they have set for themselves. This starts a downward spiral that they can’t find their way out of.

The nature of competition today starting as young as junior high, high school and college is fierce and there are thousands of young athletes competing for a minimum number of scholarships.

With many of them having hopes and dreams of reaching the pro team within their sport, so any edge that they can gain is one that they will jump at.

Playing at a level that is normally out of reach for them can result in injuries that will plague them for the rest of their lives.  Which can create lifelong habits of drug abuse.

Both genders are at risk when taking any of these enhancement drugs.

Some  have long lasting effects on the body. Some of these can include abnormalities in your liver which can lead to liver cancer, a decrease of good cholesterol and an increase of bad cholesterol, risk of high blood pressure, risk to your heart such as heart attack, heart rhythm problems and thickening of the heart muscle, problems with blood circulation and psychiatric disorders such as an increase in aggressive behaviors, rage, violence and depression and an increased tendency to drug addiction.

Other Reasons For Use of Performance-Enhancing Drugs

Performance enhancing drugs while primarily used to increase athleticism has other uses as well.

Teens may reach out to experiment with this class of drugs for many reasons but the main ones outside of athletic performance are to cope with body image limitations such as in the case of young women.

When their friends are developing faster than they are they may want to speed along mother nature and help by taking performance enhancing drugs.  Or in the case of a young man he may want to gain muscle and strength as well as endurance to be better able to perform in just regular sports.

And then there is the simple reason of just being able to fit in with their peers.

Conclusion

The question remains: do performance enhancing drugs really boost performance?

While it certainly seems that way, can we discount the cost that needs to be paid for the short term results?

While the jury is still out on the long term effects that these drugs have on our bodies and minds the short term risks are clear.

It is also important to remember that the use of performance enhancing drugs are illegal in most if not all professional sports.  So at the end of the day no matter how you look at it the use of this type of drugs seems to pose more risk than gain.

Total Gym Pilates Based Core Workout for Summer Abs

Summer is around the corner, so as we start to shed some clothing layers and enjoy the warm sunshine, let’s do so with confidence and some slim and trim abs thanks to the discipline of Pilates.

You might be pondering, “I’ve heard a lot about Pilates but what exactly is Pilates?” Here is the definition from Merriam-Webster’s dictionary: an exercise regimen that is typically performed on a floor mat or with the use of specialized apparatus and aims to improve flexibility and stability by strengthening the muscles and especially the torso-stabilizing muscles of the abdomen and lower back. In my opinion, that’s a pretty good definition and I’ve been vehemently studying and teaching Joseph Pilates’ methods for over 14 years.

Please note the phrase I underlined above. In the beginning, Joseph Pilates’ repertoire was performed on the floor. What I love about doing his brilliant, traditional exercises on the Total Gym is we can change the floor! We can elevate the floor or even make the floor inverted. As you will see from the video, this allows us to make an advanced exercise a little easier so we can perfect our form and reap the true intended benefits of the move. Conversely, if we’re rocking’ a certain move and we want to turn up the volume to make it more challenging, we can adjust our Total Gym accordingly and get even stronger. Or, by changing the level on our Total Gym and our body position, we can target specific areas to focus on our weaknesses and bring our bodies into better balance.

That’s a bunch of words to digest so ensure you watch the video and it will make perfect sense. Speaking of which, here are the exercises you’ll learn and your core and abs will love:

100’s

This is one of Joe’s staple exercises. It truly challenges your lower abs and makes your upper abs work in an isometric contraction. The funny arm pump encourages energetic breath and forces you to stabilize your core so your torso doesn’t waiver.

Roll Ups

This exercise is traditionally done on a flat floor. In my experience of teaching 1000s of mat classes, only a small percentage of students that can execute this correctly. The Total Gym allows you to elevate the floor so you can perform the Roll-Up perfectly. As you get stronger because your form is correct, you can progress by lowering the level of your Total Gym.

Coordination

The level of your Total Gym will change the dynamic and the focus of this exercise. At a higher level it will challenge your lower abs more (hello flatter tummy!) or at a lower level it will be more demanding on your upper, six pack abs.

Hug-A-Tree

One of my female clients stated, “Can’t we rename this ‘Hug-A-Man’? That’s better than hugging a tree!” This is a great chest and frontal shoulder strengthener and I add a half of a Roll-Up to target your abs and the spinal stabilizers of the lower and mid back.

Chest Expansion

One of my favorites as I love to pick on the muscles that improve your posture. When I see an older person (and I train many) with proper posture, they look years younger than their actual age. Conversely, when you see a person with stooped over, poor posture, they tend to look much older.
