Manuel Neuer given guard of honour and wears special gloves to mark 100 Germany caps as Euro 2020 hopefuls thrash Latvia

GERMANY’S stars gave Manuel Neuer a guard of honour as he earned his 100th cap for the country.

The goalkeeper made his debut against UAE in 2009 and has gone on to become one of the top shot-stoppers – inside and outside the box – of his generation.

The Bayern Munich star has remained first-choice for club and country for over a decade and lifted the World Cup in 2014.

Before Die Mannschaft’s game against Latvia on Monday, he donned a special pair of ‘100’ gloves to mark the occasion.

And the Neuer was warmly welcomed into Dusseldorf’s Merkur Spielarena as he captained his country for the landmark.

No keeper from the men’s national team had reached 100 caps for Germany before the 35-year-old, with 1970s star Sepp Maier coming closest on 95.

Silke Rottenberg and Nadine Angerer have both achieved the feat for the women’s side.

Joachim Low said ahead of the game: “From the first moment he was with us, I had the feeling he would go on to be one of the world’s great goalkeepers.”

Neuer is expected to be first-choice for Germany‘s Euro 2020 bid, with Kevin Trapp and Arsenal’s Bernd Leno also in the squad.

And he watched on as his team-mates dismantled Latvia having drawn with Denmark in their other warm-up friendly.

Ilkay Gundogan and Serge Gnabry were both on the scoresheet as Low’s men led 5-0 by half-time before Timo Werner and Leroy Sane made it 7-1.

World champions France await in Munich for the opening game of their Group F campaign on June 15.

AC Milan ‘in talks with Chelsea over TRIPLE transfer raid for Hakim Ziyech, Olivier Giroud and Fikayo Tomori’

AC MILAN are reportedly preparing a TRIPLE transfer raid on Chelsea for Hakim Ziyech, Olivier Giroud and Fikayo Tomori.

All three players have found game time hard to come by at Stamford Bridge this season.

And Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport is reporting that Serie A runners-up Milan are ready to pounce.

Tomori was shipped out on loan to AC Milan, where he obviously impressed with his performances.

Big things were expected of Ziyech after he joined Chelsea last summer for £37million from Ajax.

But the Moroccan arrived injured and didn’t do enough to impress previous boss Frank Lampard or his predecessor Thomas Tuchel.

AC Milan’s Serie A rivals Napoli are also believed to be chasing the 28-year-old.

Giroud made only 17 appearances for the Blues in the Premier League, scoring four goals.

But Chelsea announced this week they had secretly triggered a clause to extend it for a further year.

That means Giroud will no longer be free to discuss a transfer to a new club this summer unless Chelsea receive an appropriate transfer bid.

However, the veteran appears to have left the door open to Milan by claiming it was Chelsea’s decision, and not his, to activate his contract extension.

Giroud said: “I want to make it clear that Chelsea reactivated the clause in April.

“And they recently announced it to comply with Premier League rules.”

Giroud went on to praise two of Milan’s legendary strikers before calling the Italians of the continent’s best sides.

He added: “It’s fair to remember that I liked Marco van Basten and Andriy Shevchenko.

“Milan are a big club and one of the great teams in Europe.

“But today, I will not talk about my future at the club because I am focused on the France team and the Euros, which is fast approaching.”

Who is second England cricketer caught up in racism storm after Ollie Robinson suspended over social media shame?

MYSTERY surrounds the second England cricketer caught up in a racism storm.

Ollie Robinson was suspended from all international cricket on Sunday while an investigation into racist and sexist tweets from 2012 and 2013 takes place.

He could be replaced in the squad by Craig Overton, who in 2015 was reported for telling former Sussex batsman Ashar Zaidi to ‘go back to your own f****** country’.

Overton was cleared of using racist language but found guilty of abusive language. He has since played four Tests.

But on Monday night, news of another player’s previous social media comments broke.

Who is the second England cricketer?

It is not yet known who the second player is.

The ECB have not revealed his identity at this stage.

What did the second player say in his tweet?

The player is believed to have written ‘#ch**ky’ on Twitter.

He was under the age of 16 at the time it was posted.

His tweet was dug up by Wisden.com on Monday.

What have the ECB said in response?

The ECB made a comment on the incident on Monday evening.

An England spokesperson said: “It has been brought to our attention that an England player has posted historic offensive material on their social media account.

“We are looking into it and will make a further comment in due course.”

What did Ollie Robinson say in his tweets?

Robinson posted a series of revolting tweets at the age of 18, which resurfaced on his first day as an England player on Wednesday, June 2.

In 2012, Robinson tweeted using the n-word and another post said: “My new muslim friend is the bomb #wheeyyyyy.”

There were also sexist comments about ‘females who play video games actually tend to have more sex’.

He has been suspended until the conclusion of the investigation.

What did Ollie Robinson say in his apology?

Robinson, 27, faces disciplinary action after being forced to apologise.

He insisted he did not realise the posts were still on his timeline, but reiterated he is not ‘racist or sexist‘.

Part of the lengthy apology said: “On the biggest day of my career so far, I am embarrassed by the racist and sexist tweets that I posted over eight years ago which have today become public.

“I want to make it clear that I’m not racist and I’m not sexist. I deeply regret my actions and I am ashamed of making such remarks.”

What did Boris Johnson say after Robinson was banned?

The PM stated the Robinson ban is ‘over the top’ and backed Cabinet minister Oliver Downden’s calls for the all-rounder to be reinstated.

Wading into the row today, Mr Dowden said: “Ollie Robinson’s tweets were offensive and wrong. They are also a decade old and written by a teenager.

“The teenager is now a man and has rightly apologised. The ECB has gone over the top by suspending him and should think again.”

Boris Johnson backed his calls for a rethink.

His spokesman said: ‘The PM is supportive of comments from Oliver Dowden that he made via tweet this morning.

“These were comments made more than a decade ago, written by someone as a teenager, and for which they rightly apologise.”
