Margot Robbie continues construction of Los Angeles dream home amid wave of crime and homelessness

Published

Margot Robbie and her husband Tom Ackerley are pressing ahead with the construction of their new dream home in Los Angeles, despite being warned to ‘get out’ as the neighbourhood suffers a wave of crime and homelessness.

The Australian actress, 30, and her British filmmaker husband, 31, splashed $6.5million on two adjacent plots of land near Abbot Kinney Boulevard in the once-elite beachside Venice neighbourhood in 2019.

And while members of the community have recently warned the couple to abandon their building plans, construction continued as usual on Monday as bulldozers plugged away at the site.

According to building plans, Margot and Tom intend to build a two-storey family dwelling with an attached garage.

It comes after insiders told Woman’s Day magazine on Monday that Margot and Tom are making a grave mistake by continuing construction.

Venice has seen a vast increase in homelessness and crime since the COVID-19 pandemic gripped Los Angeles, with hundreds of tents now lining the beach’s famous boardwalk.

‘It’s a completely different neighbourhood from when Margot and Tom bought it – the crime rate’s gone up 177 per cent since lockdown,’ an insider told Woman’s Day magazine.

A former taxi driver who is now homeless also told told the publication that Margot and Tom are asking for trouble by continuing their building project.

‘I know people here who will target Margot’s house for burglary because they know she’s got money,’ they warned.

‘She’d be better off if she just abandoned it. I don’t know why anyone would want to spend millions of dollars to buy a house next to all this.’

The couple are already trying to offload one of their LA properties, having listed their smaller home in Hancock Park for $4.5million late last month.

Margot purchased the two-story residence in 2017 for $.3.5million shortly after her marriage to British filmmaker Tom.

Margot and Tom’s neighbour in Venice, Crocodile Dundee star Paul Hogan, 81, meanwhile recently told fans he was ‘desperate’ to leave crime-stricken Venice and return to Australia.

Paul, who moved to the US in 2005 after growing up in Sydney’s western suburbs,  is currently holed up inside his ‘fortress-like’ $4.5million mansion with his son Chance, 23.

When asked how he was coping with Los Angeles’ recent crime wave, Hogan simply said he ‘doesn’t go anywhere’.

‘[I’m] bored in lockdown, and the minute I can get on the plane without being locked in a hotel for two weeks, I’m back,’ he said.

Terrifying situation: It comes as residents of Venice say soaring crime rates and the exploding homeless population have made life in the elite beachside community unbearable

The movie star went on to explain he ‘wouldn’t survive’ Australia’s mandatory 14-day hotel quarantine.

‘My son [Chance] would have to be with me… we’d strangle each other,’ he said.

Fights occur several times a day, while shootings and stabbings are common, say residents of Venice Beach, who are fearful of increased crime rates since the homeless encampments became permanent

Venice Neighbourhood Council member Soledad Ursua said the homeless encampments had exploded during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

She said residents were afraid to be out after dark, and there were fights several times a day and shootings and stabbings on a weekly basis.

‘It’s just a very dangerous time to be a Venice resident right now,’ she said.

‘Venice’s world famous beach and boardwalk are crippled,’ a letter to city and county officials from residents says

According to figures from the Los Angeles Police Department provided to the Venice Neighbourhood Council, the violent robberies in the neighbourhood are up 177 per cent from last year.

The same period has also seen a 162 per cent increase in cases of assault with a deadly weapon involving a homeless person.

Meanwhile, hundreds of residents have put their signatures to a letter pleading for help from city and county officials.

‘Venice’s world famous beach and boardwalk are crippled,’ it says.

‘Local children are refusing to come to the beach because they’re frightened by what they’ve witnessed. Seniors who live on or near the boardwalk are terrified of walking in their own neighbourhoods.’

Royal Ascot: Georgia Toffolo swigs champagne and bemoans her ‘horrific’ sweat patches

It’s one of the most glamorous occasions in the British social calendar.

And Georgia Toffolo swigged champagne on Tuesday whilst bemoaning her ‘horrific’ sweat patches as she lead the stars for the first race day at Royal Ascot at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire.

Despite appearing worse for wear in an Instagram video, the former Made In Chelsea star, 26, nevertheless looked elegant as she attended the star-studded event with a host of celebrities such as GMB presenter Charlotte Hawkins, Simon Cowell, his girlfriend Lauren Silverman and his ex, Sinitta.

No holding back: Former Made In Chelsea star Georgia Toffolo swigged champagne on Tuesday whilst bemoaning her ‘horrific’ sweat patches as she lead the stars for the first race day at Royal Ascot at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire

Toff, who is also a regular segment host on Good Morning Britain, looked stunning in a pale blue dress with puff sleeves as she posed for snaps at the annual horse meet.

The TV personality teamed her chic dress, which also boasted a large decorative bow, with a floral fascinator and a cream bag, which was no doubt full of essentials for her day out.

Toff opted for a glamorous coat of make-up and wore her hair up, while boosting her petite frame with a pair of heels which featured a bejewelled bow on the front.

Speaking from the comfort of her private box at the racecourse, she flashed her sweat patches as she discussed her bespoke outfit.

The reality star said: ‘It’s a “Try It On With Toff” Ascot special, I’ve got a glass of champers, the dress has already been taken apart, I’ve got horrific sweat patches, I’ve already got my cheap Zara shoes on, £30, brought about five years ago.’

She proceeded to spill champagne on her spare shoes- which she revealed were too big –  as she continued talking through her race day look.

‘So this is a rented bag from By Rotation. My dress is being made in partnership with Hannah Sophia,’ she said as she clumsily adjusted her fallen shoulder sleeve. ‘And I’ve got sticky tape everywhere so my t**s don’t fall out. Wait a minute, I’m a bit tired. Jesus Christ I’ve just seen a horse!’

Let slip: ‘So this is a rented bag from By Rotation. My dress is being made in partnership with Hannah Sophia,’ she said as she clumsily adjusted her fallen shoulder sleeve

Toff fixed her belt onto her garment as she said: ‘So that’s my beautiful bow, how do I look?’

Captioning the upload to social media, she said: ‘Ascot outfit of the day I might have had a sherbet [clinking champagne glasses and crying laughing face emoji].’

Elsewhere at the event, presenter Charlotte, 46, looked incredible in the midi number which featured a pop of yellow around the neckline and cinched her in at the waist.

Wow! Former MIC star Georgia Toffolo and GMB presenter Charlotte Hawkins cut seriously elegant figures as they attended the first race day at Royal Ascot at Ascot Racecourse, Berkshire, on Tuesday

Fashionable: The TV personality teamed her chic dress which also boasted a large decorative bow with a floral fascinator and a cream bag, which was no doubt full of essentials for her day out

She completed the look with strappy nude heeled sandals and carried a boxy cream handbag with her which featured a horse design on the front.

Charlotte accessorized with statement silver earrings and wore her hair in a chic low bun while opting for a glamorous makeup look.

Meanwhile former Made In Chelsea star Spencer Matthews made an appearance at the races wearing a smart black jacket, white waistcoat and grey trousers.

Enjoying the fun! Animated Toff appeared to be having a great time at the race day

Spencer, 32, posed next to an 8ft water fountain made of 1000 recycled plastic glasses and encouraged racegoers to hydrate throughout the day.

Strictly’s Bill Bailey also attended the star-studded event and looked smart in his three-piece suit and black hat.

Royal Ascot is part of a list of pilot events taking place, allowing 12,000 revellers to attend, before the possible lifting of all measures to curtail the Covid-19 pandemic in July.

Arrivals: Simon Cowell, 61, arrived with his parter Lauren Silverman as the couple walked hand in hand

Beautiful: Lauren looked stunning in a lemon dress which she teamed with an elaborate floral hat

Racing post! Simon arrived armed with a brief case and a copy of the Racing Post

Suave: Meanwhile former Made In Chelsea star Spencer Matthews made an appearance at the races wearing a smart black jacket, white waistcoat and grey trousers

Day out: Strictly’s Bill Bailey also attended the star-studded event and looked smart in his three-piece suit and black hat

Earlier this month, The Telegraph reported the Queen, 95, – an avid horse racing fan – would not attend this year’s Ascot because of ongoing restrictions.

Ascot had been planning for an attendance of 4,000 a day. The new figure will allow all those who rolled over 2020 bookings to be accommodated with a ‘material but not significant’ number of tickets left over, according to a track spokesperson.

The number of spectators will be well below the usual attendance of over 300,000 over the five days but the increased number was welcomed by Frankie Dettori, whose 73 royal meeting victories have only been bettered by Lester Piggott (116).

Radiant: Charlotte looked incredible in the elegant dress as she showed off her nude bag with an apt horse design

Glamorous: The broadcaster turned heads in her bright yellow fascinator which had a bow design

Dettori, who was leading rider at the royal meeting for the seventh time last year, said: ‘There’s nothing better than Royal Ascot with people. I know it’s not 60,000 (a day) but it’s better than what we thought.

‘Last year I was leading rider at Royal Ascot and won three Group Ones, including the Gold Cup. To have nobody there to see any of that, it was like someone had cut my arm off.

‘Those are the biggest races we’ve got here and I won them in front of empty grandstands. It goes without saying it wasn’t the same.’

Exciting: Royal Ascot is part of a list of pilot events taking place, allowing 12,000 revellers to attend

Smart: Spencer, 32, posed next to an 8ft water fountain made of 1000 recycled plastic glasses and encouraged racegoers to hydrate throughout the day

Couple: Bill attended the event with his wife Kristin Bailey who looked chic in a black dress

Visitors to the Royal and Queen Anne enclosures have to abide by a strict dress code, which does not allow bare midriffs or strapless dresses, but for guests in the Windsor and other enclosures the rules are more relaxed.

With the clue in the name, Royal Ascot is hugely popular with the monarchy and Her Majesty is usually a regular at the event. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, she had attended every year since ascending the throne.

Last year, dedicated Royal Ascot showed off their finest frocks and fascinators while celebrating the fourth day of the racing meet at home.

Arrival: Zara Tindall, 40, led the way for glamorous racegoers as they made their first public appearance since the birth of their son Lucas for the first day of Royal Ascot today

Crowds: Zara looked thrilled to be back in the stands as she got stuck into the races, cheering on her bets with best pal Dolly Maude (centre) and Anna Lisa Balding (right)

Chic: The Queen’s granddaughter looked elegant in her polka dot ensemble as she watched the races with her husband Mike and best friend Dolly Maude

Thirsty: Spencer posed for the cameras with a cheeky grin as he filled up some of the bottles

Even the most committed fans were left watching jockeys riding, wearing face masks, broadcast virtually.

Among the racing enthusiasts who stayed at home was the Queen, who has been forced to watch the event from Windsor Castle for the first time in her 68-year reign.

In an emotional note shared last year, Her Majesty praised the ‘valiant’ efforts of organisers and said she is sure it will still be the ‘highlight’ of the racing calendar, despite the ‘different’ circumstances.

Daring: The reality star – who is married to radio presenter Vogue Williams – balanced on a chair to pour the water

Here they are! Sinitta, 52, arrives at Royal Ascot with her mother Miquel Brown in sun-soaked conditions

Radiant: Sinitta wore a floppy orange hat with a blue flower while her mother sported a leopard print dress and yellow hat
