Watch hilarious moment Sven-Goran Eriksson’s Sky interview is repeatedly interrupted by ex-MP Lembit Opik calling him

SVEN-GORAN ERIKSSON’S interview with Sky News didn’t quite go to plan on Tuesday morning – after Lembit Opik kept interrupting.

The Swedish manager, 73, was speaking to Sky News about his time as England boss between 2000 and 2006 ahead of this summer’s European Championship.

Former politician Lembit Opik twice tried to call Eriksson during his chat with Sky[/caption]

But as the ex-Three Lions chief spoke, he became the latest victim of the Zoom era.

As he attempted to speak, Opik’s face popped up on the big screen with the former politician attempting to call him.

A sheepish Sven quickly hung up in a bid to keep his interview going.

But no more than a second later, a stubborn Opik burst onto the screen again as he tried to get through to the Swede for a second time.

Opik was a former member of the Liberal Democrats, even unsuccessfully standing to run as president of the party in 2004 and 2008.

But he was arguably as famous for his life outside of politics as in it.

Opik famously dated weather presenter Sian Lloyd and one half of pop group The Cheeky Girls, Gabriela Irimia – then 18 years his junior.

He also appeared on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here in 2010 but was the third person to be voted out, as Stacey Solomon won.

Eriksson, meanwhile, also spoke to talkSPORT on Tuesday morning – enduring an awkward chat with Darren Bent.

The Swede left Bent at home for the 2006 World Cup, instead taking a teenage Theo Walcott.

When asked about the decision, Eriksson revealed: “Well I couldn’t find anyone better.

“Then I thought why not take him with his speed, but also when you pick number 23 he will probably not win the World Cup for you.

“I thought, for the future, he will be very good and it was a pity he couldn’t play and depended a lot that Rooney got sent off and we played an hour with ten against 11 against Portugal in the quarter-final.

“It was not time to change anything at that time.

“We can discuss that for a long time. I thought it was a good idea and I had a lot of talks about it and decided to take him.

“The media were very positive about it, but when he didn’t play they were very negative about it.

“We did it. If it was right or wrong, who knows. Whatever I had done there, it wouldn’t have changed the result in the World Cup.”

THE SUN is finally shining, the domestic season is over and that means only one thing – it’s coming home.

Euro 2020 will conclude on July 11 at Wembley, with the winners walking the famous steps up to the Royal Box to collect their prize.

Gareth Southgate is dreaming of taking England all the way to glory – but should you be backing them to do so?[/caption]

Three years on from Gareth Southgate’s side crashing out in the World Cup semi-finals, his exciting blend of youth and experience are hoping to end 55 years of hurt.

The Three Lions are one of the ante-post favourites to lift the cup and SunSport is on hand to bring you the very best England bets ahead of a jam-packed month.

BoyleSports bet of the day

It’s all set for a Sunday sizzler as England begin their challenge against Croatia at Wembley this weekend.

We’re expecting a nervy match in 27c heat at the Home of Football, with Southgate’s men desperate to calm the nerves with three points.

And Harry Kane will be the man trusted with getting revenge on Croatia for that World Cup heartache.

The Tottenham man was rested in the win over Romania and should be going into this one all guns blazing.

PA

Kane to net first against Croatia is our bet of the day at 3/1[/caption]

The Three Lions won two penalties in that victory at Middlesbrough thanks to their quick feet in and around the box.

There’s no chance Jordan Henderson is snatching the ball away from Harry, who is the designed spot-kick taker and rarely fails.

And he’ll always be provided with two or three golden chances a game with the creative talent around him.

Kane is not only a terrific price for tournament Golden Boot, but you can get a whopping 3/1 on him scoring first against Croatia.

That’s value and not to be missed.

England top scorer

There’s plenty of attacking flair in this Southgate side, even if he’s sometimes criticised for blunting it to shield a shaky defence.

All of England’s play is garnered towards providing for their main forward.

And it’s no surprise to see Kane way out in front at odds of just 4/5.

He’s the big fancy of many to win the Golden Boot for the entire tournament – and barring injury, the man is almost guaranteed goals.

He won the Golden Boot in the 2018 World Cup while below his best and was the Premier League’s top scorer last season despite Spurs’ struggles.

If you want something a bit longer for your money, it’s worth a small punt on Marcus Rashford at 13/2.

His price has been inflated by a poor end to the season, but Southgate trusts him and Rashford is too good for this barren spell to continue.

The Man Utd star has netted 22 times this season – despite his recent issues – and loves a goal at Wembley, where the Three Lions will play the majority of their games.

After an incredible year for the campaigner off the pitch, it would be so fitting if he could inspire a new generation with some match-winning performances.

How far will England progress?

Let’s face it – we’re all going to get very giddy if England make a fast start to the tournament.

After the year we’ve all had, you’re allowed to get a little bit excited.

But the way this tournament is set up, with Wembley front and centre of the schedule, England have arguably never had a better chance.

Incredibly, the Three Lions are actually just 5/1 to end 55-years of hurt this summer.

There’s real value elsewhere though and we’re happy to take the price on England reaching the semi-finals.

That’s an excellent 6/4 and is a safer bet with the potential schedule looking favourable should the Three Lions get past the last-16.

Winning the group would put them on a collision course with the so-called Group of Death and a probable clash against Portugal, Germany or France.

Negotiate past that game and the competition really opens up – so don’t miss out on those early prices.

First game – England vs Croatia (Sunday, 2pm)

Revenge is on the menu for Southgate and Co.

It’s almost three long years since that cruel night in Moscow, where Keiran Trippier’s fifth-minute freekick had the nation going bonkers.

We all know how that ended – but this isn’t the same Croatian side as 2018.

They’ve won just two of their last eight internationals and those victories were over Malta and Cyprus.

Hardly anything for England to fear on paper then, with Croatia’s aging side 9/2 to win at Wembley.

We won’t be going near that and reckon that the Three Lions get their campaign off to a winning start – but it’s unlikely to be pretty.

Southgate’s men scored plenty in the qualification phase but are under immense pressure to deliver now on home soil.

With worries over his defence in this opener – and Harry Maguire definitely ruled out – the England manager may match Croatia’s midfield man-for-man.

We don’t expect a classic and reckon this could be decided by the odd goal.

As such, under 2.5 goals at 7/10 is a great bet while England to win 1-0 is a terrific 5/1 and can get your tournament off to a winning start – in more ways than one.

SunSport’s best bets

  • Under 2.5 goals at Wembley @ 7/10
  • England to win @ 5/6
  • Three Lions to triumph 1-0 in tight game @ 5/1

Jack Grealish next club: Arsenal and Man Utd in mix for £100m Aston Villa star but Man City made odds-on favourites

MANCHESTER CITY are frontrunners in the battle to sign Aston Villa star Jack Grealish.

That’s according to bookmakers Betfair, who’ve installed the Premier League champions as odds-on favourites to clinch his signature this summer.

Manchester City are odds-on favourites to sign Aston Villa star Jack Grealish

The Citizens were priced at 9/4 a few weeks ago, but that price has tumbled 4/6.

Pep Guardiola and Co. are looking to freshen things up at the Etihad Stadium after their Champions League defeat to Chelsea.

And £100million-rated Grealish is high on their list of potential additions with Pep a known admirer.

City are thought to be ‘encouraged’ by Villa’s £33million club-record deal for Norwich midfielder Emiliano Buendia.

And now believe a deal is possible despite the player having signed a five-year contract to stay at Villa Park in 2020.

The 25-year-old enjoyed an outstanding campaign with the Villans, scoring seven goals and providing 12 assists in 27 appearances.

Jack Grealish to sign before 3rd September – Betfair

  • Manchester City – 4/6 – Was 9/4
  • Manchester United – 7/1
  • Arsenal – 7/1
  • Chelsea – 16/1
  • Tottenham – 16/1
  • Liverpool – 25/1

Grealish also looks set to start for England in Sunday’s Euro 2020 opener against Croatia having impressed in last week’s friendlies.

The Athletic recently claimed that Grealish was tempted by a high-profile switch to Manchester United but now prefers City.

And that, paired with their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho, is perhaps why United’s odds of signing Grealish have drifted from 4/1 to 7/1.

Arsenal are also available at 7/1 with the club desperate for reinforcements.

The Gunners failed to qualify for European football for the first time in 26 years and a creative playmaker is high on their list of priorities.

Chelsea and Tottenham are both offered at 16/1 with Liverpool the outsiders of the pack at 25/1.

Noel Whelan thinks Grealish’s arrival at the Etihad could take the club to the next level and are capable of buying any player their want.

He told FootballInsider: “They have the collateral to buy any player they want. There’s no doubt Pep has the bit between his teeth. He’s hungry.

“He will sign players. Sergio Aguero is just one player who is going. Grealish will be wanted by many clubs, not just City.

“When you look at the way he plays and what he can do to a side, there’s no doubt City will be tempted.

“He would propel them to another level.”

Derby winner Adayar set for King George at Ascot as ‘signs are good’ following surreal win at Epsom

Published

DERBY hero Adayar will skip the Irish equivalent for a likely tilt at the King George at Ascot.

Charlie Appleby reports his ace to have come out of the Epsom classic in tip-top shape after a ‘surreal’ win.

Adayar beat 50-1 shot Mojo Star into second[/caption]

The 16-1 winner provided jockey Adam Kirby with an emotional career highlight and a second Derby win for Appleby.

The Newmarket trainer said: “Adayar has come out of the race great. He went on the seawalker yesterday morning and he has been out for a jog this morning and has been turned out in the paddock and he has shown his wellness. All signs are good so far.

“Without rubber stamping anything the discussions that are taking place at the moment are that we will give this horse a bit more time and look towards going to a King George with him.

“I think timing-wise it suits him and also we will have tested our mettle a bit against the older horses.

“After that we can see what he is like against the older horses there and if he happens to win a King George we can work back from an Arc. If he gets beat in a King George then we revert back to our original plan which was going down the St Leger route.

“I think, personally, looking from the outside having won neither race, I would rather pinpoint one as we all know in the autumn it is a big ask to do a St Leger then an Arc.”

Appleby was still pinching himself that Adayar landed the stable’s second Derby in recent seasons.

He added: “When I watched Masar win I stood in the same position under the grandstand and unfortunately the television went off so I had to switch and watch on the television across the track. At the time I still had my eye on Hurricane Lane as William Buick had made his move, which I thought was a winning move and I took my eye of Adayar.

“It wasn’t until I picked up the race commentary that Adayar had skipped probably a length and a half clear and once he had done that I was confident he would put it to bed as the one thing he was always going to do was gallop strongly to the line.

“The one thing that surprised us all, and to this day it still surprises me, is that acceleration that he showed. It’s been well documented about Adam’s ride and the gap that he had to take – it was very much a brave man’s route but he had a brave horse underneath him.

“To have trained two Derby winners is of course surreal.”
